Tip: Windows Update

March 4, 2008

The first time I wrote this tip, IE crashed on me. Must’ve known I was writing something derogatory about it.

Anyway, my tip for today is not to install driver updates from Windows Update. I have tried downloading various drivers from it, and strange things happen.

For instance, I updated my grandfather’s computer, and updated the audio driver. It was for a completly different audio chip than the one he had. So, I had to download a new driver.

I downloaded an update for our new computer for the network chip. It was also for a different network chip, and I had to roll back the driver to get on the net again.

So, don’t download updates from Windows Update. Download them from the manufacturer’s website. It’s safer.
